My Experience... OSCON 2011

I used to attend conferences quite a lot in the 1990’s; in fact I was on the planning and speaker selection committee for the CA-Technicon conference for 2 years. OSCON is the first major conference I have been to since I really discovered and adopted the principles of the Open Source movement. So it was doubly important from my perspective to get to this conference.  Additionally, I had started the next phase of my career only 3 weeks prior by taking a new senior consulting role with OSSCube and I had yet to meet my new “handlers”.

OSCON Participation: Great Team Work…Great Learning!

The recently held OSCON 2011 Convention in Portland, OR was a fantastic experience for the OSSCube team. This conference gave me the opportunity to meet and speak with many technology evangelists around the world. I delivered a major presentation on SmartWorks Project (a federal level use system that OSSCube has helped design and roll out) during day two of the event while the, President Lavanya Rastogi and Head of Business Development & Customer Advocacy Vivek Agrawal alternated booth staffing duty and new business prospect meetings throughout the event.

Getting started with Zend Studio for Eclipse: What can we do with Code Editor

In my last blog on Zend Studio for Eclipse, We looked at Views and Perspectives and what they were (a perspective is a collection of views); this time we are going to look more closely at a particular view, that of the code editor and what we can do with it. As you can see in the included screen shot of the code editor there are a lot of things to be aware of. First, notice the code itself.

Getting started with Zend Studio for Eclipse: What can we do with views and perspectives

Getting started with Zend Studio for Eclipse: Views, Perspectives, and Workspaces

Hello!

I am Peter MacIntyre and beginning with this post, I will start my series on Zend Studio at the OSSCube blog. Since, this is the first post, I will start with a rather straight forward topic; that of getting underway with setting up the programming environment in Zend Studio for Eclipse - the next generation in the Zend Studio IDE family. We will not cover the installation procedure as that is fairly easy on each platform.  We will just take a look at the environment after a fresh install.

Calculating Memory Requirements for NDB Storage Engine

While calculating the storage requirements in NDB, extra consideration is needed when calculating storage requirement for NDB tables. For tables using the NDB cluster storage engine, there is the factor of 4 – byte alignment to be taken into account when calculating storage requirements. This means that all NDB data storage is done in multiples of 4 bytes.

Object Relational Mapping

Object Relational Mapping (ORM) integrate object programming language capabilities with relational databases, managed by different relational database managers like MySql, Oracle etc. ORM has information about the object model in our application and knows how to transfer or map object instances data into our relational database structure and vice versa. It hides and encapsulate the changes made in the data source; whenever data sources or their correspondign API changes one only needs to change the ORM and not the application which uses ORM to data transformation.

11 things to keep in mind when writing your HTML

We all know HTML; chances are that at least once in our life, we must've seen and worked with HTML or markups in general. For those of us doing any web development, we regularly eat, sleep and occasionally dream HTML, apart from other things. We might've learned these things during our years of working with markup; but just in case, so as not to forget, I'm writing them down.

Working with Zend Lucene Search

Zend Search Lucene is a fulltext search engine written in PHP. It is an implementation of the java-based Apache Lucene in PHP. Lucene Search is a part of Zend Framework (ZF) and large chunks of ZF can be used as a standalone and integrated into any existing application. Before getting into the minute details of ZSL, we should first understand what a fulltext search is. It is a combination of indexing content and then conducting search. For ZSL, index is made up of documents and these documents, in turn, contain fields, which contain content that is queried.

Migrating Data to MySQL

Migration essentially means the process of transferring data between storage types, formats, or computer systems. This post will divulge on why and how you should migrate to MySQL from any other database system.

Why MySQL?This is the first question that will arise when a user wants to migrate databases. Why should you choose MySQL over other options? Some of the main reasons are:

HL7 Standards : A key to deal with healthcare interoperability issues

Interoperability is a fundamental requirement of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption for the social and economic benefits that we always look for and we may like to define interoperability as layman’s interpretation “a common language for communication that is understandable to all the participating parties” and as a technical interpretation “a common communication protocol that is adopted by the participating software or computer applications”.

I wonder what will happen to those thousands of applications, millions of lines of codes, products that are running on PHP 4. It will be some task to convert the existing applications to PHP 5 compliant.
