The Confessions of an iPhone user

In this blog I have decided to change the pace a little and move away from a discussion on a particular Zend product. My experiences in switching from one smart phone to another are the topic today.

I have been using my iPhone 4 now for over a year. I got on the first day they were released in Canada. It took me two or three days to figure it out before I could use it efficiently. This month I had to give the phone back as it was connected to my previous job, so I went out and looked for a new phone.

Object Oriented Programming in PHP 5.3

In this series of articles I want to introduce the reader to Object Oriented Programming (OOP) as implemented in PHP 5.3. The implementation of OOP in PHP 5.3 is quite different to that of earlier versions, so it is good to be starting the examination of it at this version level.
We will start with some basic definitions as found on wikipedia.com followed by my own “simplified” definitions then we will get into some basic code examples.

File Level Manipulation in PHP 5 – Part 2

In part one of this blog series, we looked at some of the file level functions that are available in PHP 5. In part 2 we will be looking more closely at their uses within a small functioning web survey system.

After authenticating the user by asking them for an email address which we used to create their survey folder, or access it if they had already started their data entry, we direct them to the first actual page of the survey (see next screen shot), the form is ready for the user to begin filling in their survey responses.

File Level Manipulation in PHP 5 – Part 1

This will be a multi-part series on using files as an alternative to simple database processes.  PHP has many little hidden features within its vast toolset. One of these features - often overlooked - is its uncanny capability to handle complex files. Sure, everyone knows that PHP can open a file, but what can it really do with that file? What actually brought the true range of possibilities to my attention was a request from a prospective client who had “no money,” but wanted a dynamic web survey developed.
